Akshay Kumar Teams Up with Vipul Shah for Alien Action Thriller Samuk; Hollywood Creature and Action Experts Join Project

Superstar Akshay Kumar is locked in to headline a massive, large-scale sci-fi action thriller titled Samuk. Directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the ambitious alien survival thriller is currently in active development and is expected to go on floors shortly.
Positioned as a high-octane theatrical experience, the project marks Kumar’s venture into a hybrid space that combines survival horror, military realism, and sci-fi storytelling. To match global standards, the makers have signed a premier international technical crew with extensive experience across major Hollywood franchises.
Bringing Tactile, Old-School Horror Back to Cinema
Director Kanishk Varma, known for helming Sanak and Inside Edge, revealed that the foundational blueprint for the film stems from his fascination with elite defense forces and iconic survival cinema.
“Samuk was born from my love for the SPG (Special Protection Group) world and survival thrillers like Alien and Predator. Bringing those influences together with Akshay sir has been surreal,” Varma shared.
Crucially, the filmmaker emphasized a creative reliance on practical effects over digital green-screens: “I always wanted the creature to feel physically real on set. That old-school tactile horror is what made films like Alien timeless.”

The behind-the-scenes roster features legendary industry names tasked with crafting the film’s visual and physical intensity. Acclaimed Hollywood creature designer Alec Gillis—a protégé of the legendary Stan Winston—is designing the primary antagonist. Gillis’ iconic filmography includes work on the Alien, Predator, Starship Troopers, It, and Tremors franchises.
“Working with Kanishk has been fantastic because he genuinely loves practical creature filmmaking,” Gillis stated. “Together, we designed the title character, which is truly a unique alien horror. In an era of CGI and AI, it is gratifying that directors and audiences still value handcrafted, traditional monsters.”
Praising the leading man, Gillis added, “He has the physicality of Jason Statham and the likeability of Tom Cruise. The challenge is creating a monster worthy of facing him… Defeating this new classic movie monster will not be an easy task, even for him.”
Producer Vipul Shah underlined the production house’s commitment to pushing creative boundaries in Indian cinema. “We always try to challenge ourselves with different genres, and Samuk is something Indian cinema hasn’t attempted before. Our aim is to create a world-class alien thriller for audiences,” Shah remarked.
