Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has confirmed he is developing a feature film inspired by the high-profile Tarun Tejpal case. The project announcement follows the Bombay High Court’s recent decision to overturn Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal, convicting the former editor of sexual assault and sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Bhardwaj plans to structure the narrative using a Rashomon-style approach, presenting the events through multiple conflicting perspectives. The director explained that the sharp contrast between the lower court’s acquittal and the High Court’s conviction makes it a compelling study in human perception. Having thoroughly analyzed the 500-page court judgment, Bhardwaj emphasized that the film aims to uncover lesser-known details while remaining a significant reflection on society.
To maintain fairness, the director intends to approach the material as a dispassionate observer rather than taking a predetermined moral stance. He noted that a story is incomplete without showcasing all viewpoints, comparing the approach to recognizing a glass as both half-full and half-empty depending on one’s perspective.
Regarding casting, Bhardwaj expressed a preference for an actor who is largely unfamiliar with the real-world case. He wants the lead actor to approach the role without bias or preconceived opinions, viewing the narrative almost as a piece of fiction.
The project is currently being developed in partnership with a major Bollywood studio, though specific details about the production house and official cast remain undisclosed. Meanwhile, Tejpal has indicated plans to appeal the High Court’s conviction before the Supreme Court.
