Mumbai’s Iconic Gaiety-Galaxy Cinema Shut Down Temporarily Over Non-Renewal of License
Mumbai’s iconic single-screen theater complex, Gaiety-Galaxy (G7 Multiplex) in Bandra, has temporarily halted all operations following administrative orders regarding the non-renewal of its operating license. The sudden closure of the landmark cinema hub—widely regarded as a key barometer for mass movie audience reactions—has sent shockwaves through film trade circles and local moviegoers.
The development came to light after journalist Narendra Gupta shared details on social media, revealing a formal notice posted outside the venue by the Mumbai Police. The notice explicitly stated that the complex was asked to cease screenings because the management failed to renew its mandatory operating license on time. While the theater remained fully operational through Sunday, September 6, all scheduled shows across its six public screens were suspended starting Monday.

Industry sources indicate that the executive management of Gaiety-Galaxy, headed by veteran exhibitor Manoj Desai, is working to resolve the administrative oversight with local authorities. The venue is expected to clear its compliance documentation and resume normal operations shortly.
Established on November 24, 1972, with the inaugural screening of Ramesh Sippy’s classic Seeta Aur Geeta, Gaiety-Galaxy originally comprised three primary screens: Gaiety, Galaxy, and Gemini. Gaiety remains the largest hall with nearly 1,000 seats, while Galaxy accommodates around 800 patrons. In the late 1990s, the management expanded the property into the G7 Multiplex format, introducing smaller screening halls including Gem, Glamour, Gossip, and the Grace preview theater.
Celebrated for affordable ticket pricing and close proximity to Bandra railway station, Gaiety-Galaxy holds a unique position in Indian cinema culture. Film stars, directors, and producers frequently visit the premises during major release weekends to experience crowd reactions firsthand.
