Bombay High Court Clears ‘Raja Shivaji’ for Release; Dismisses Title Dispute PIL

In a significant legal victory for the makers of Raja Shivaji, the Bombay High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought to stall the film’s theatrical release. The court’s decision effectively clears any hurdles for the Marathi-Hindi bilingual epic to debut as scheduled today, May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day.
The petition, filed by the Sree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Foundation, had objected to the title, arguing that the omission of the honorific “Chhatrapati” was disrespectful to the legacy of the iconic Maratha ruler.
The Court’s Observation: “No Real Public Cause”
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad rejected the plea, questioning the timing and intent of the litigation. The bench noted that the petition was filed just two days before the release, despite the film’s title and release date being in the public domain for over a year. The judges stated that the title Raja Shivaji is neither insulting nor derogatory. The court cautioned against the misuse of PILs for “motivated” objections, reiteratig that such litigation should be reserved for genuine public concerns rather than eleventh-hour theater disputes.
The Producer’s Defense: A Matter of History
Counsel representing the producers, including Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia Deshmukh, and Jio Studios, provided a clear historical justification for the title:
- Pre-Coronation Era: The film specifically chronicles the life of Shivaji Maharaj before his coronation in 1674—the pivotal event where he officially assumed the title of “Chhatrapati.”
- CBFC Approved: The makers informed the court that a detailed disclaimer explaining this historical context is already included in the film and has been fully approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Release Status
With the legal roadblock removed, Raja Shivaji is now playing in cinemas across Maharashtra and India. The film features a massive ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, and Vidya Balan, and is projected to see record-breaking footfalls over the holiday weekend.
The court’s ruling serves as a final stamp of approval for the project, allowing the “Dhurandhar” storytelling of Riteish Deshmukh to take center stage without further controversy.
