Global Landmark: Bend It Like Beckham Remains the Only Film Screened in Every Country

Gurinder Chadha’s iconic sports comedy Bend It Like Beckham recently marked its 24th anniversary, cementing its legacy not just as a cultural phenomenon, but as a historic milestone in international film distribution. Produced on a modest budget of $5.6 million, the 2002 smash hit grossed over $92.2 million worldwide and holds a singular distinction in cinema history: it remains the only feature film ever formally distributed in every single country on Earth, including the famously isolated nation of North Korea.
The film’s journey through North Korea began in 2004 when it screened to sold-out crowds of over 12,000 viewers at the Pyongyang International Film Festival. Its impact peaked on December 26, 2010, when it became the first Western film ever broadcast nationwide on North Korean state television (Korean Central Television). Negotiated by the British Embassy in Pyongyang to mark ten years of diplomatic relations, the historic broadcast brought the football-centric story directly into North Korean households.
However, bringing the 112-minute feature to state television required significant edits. To align with local broadcast standards and political sensitivities, censors trimmed nearly 50 minutes from the runtime, heavily editing themes related to homosexuality, religion, and interracial relationships. Despite the drastic cuts, the underlying story of passion and persistence resonated deeply in a nation where football is widely celebrated.
Featuring a standout cast led by Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anupam Kher, and Zohra Sehgal, the film follows a British-Indian teenager navigating traditional family expectations to pursue her dream of playing competitive football. Decades after its initial release, Chadha’s beloved masterpiece continues to serve as an unparalleled benchmark for cross-cultural storytelling and universal cinematic reach.
