Umesh Shukla to Adapt Acclaimed Play ‘Madhuri vs Dixit’ into Feature Film

Director Umesh Shukla is officially bringing another one of his successful stage plays to the big screen. After the premiere of his new Hindi play, Madhuri vs Dixit, on April 26, 2026, the filmmaker confirmed that a movie version is already in the works. This follows his successful tradition of turning popular theater productions into hit films, much like he did with OMG: Oh My God! and 102 Not Out.
The story originally gained popularity as a Gujarati play titled Madhuri Dixit, which ran for nearly 150 shows. To celebrate that milestone, the team launched a Hindi version that Shukla describes as even sharper. The stage production currently stars Riddhi Shukla and Jaideep Shah, and the director plans to keep the same cast for the upcoming film adaptation.
Shukla is currently finalizing the script and intends for this to be his first-ever Gujarati feature film. However, he is also considering making it a bilingual project in both Hindi and Gujarati to reach a wider audience. The film will keep the title Madhuri vs Dixit and is expected to feature the director’s trademark blend of family humor and social commentary.
The play’s recent premiere was a major success, drawing praise from industry veterans like Paresh Rawal and Dilip Joshi. While actress Madhuri Dixit couldn’t attend the opening night due to her filming schedule, she is aware of the project. The director hopes she can attend the next performance on May 9 at the ISKCON Auditorium in Mumbai.
