Thirteen years following its original theatrical release, Hansal Mehta’s National Award-winning biographical film Shahid has officially landed on Prime Video. Reacting to the digital premiere, writer and editor Apurva Asrani shared a reflective post on X, questioning the reasons behind the prolonged delay. He pointed out that Shahid was released in 2013, just before a shifting political climate where dissenters, human rights activists, and journalists increasingly faced heightened public suspicion and institutional pressure. Asrani observed that during this intervening period, many creators struggling to tell dissenting stories either faced immense obstacles or were co-opted into producing more politically compliant narratives that received awards despite artistic mediocrity.

Pondering the sudden 2026 digital release, Asrani openly asked, “So why now? Has the mood changed? Is there growing resistance to the politics of fear?” While the exact reasons for the platform’s acquisition remain unclear, Asrani expressed pride in the project, noting that Shahid was pivotal in re-establishing his career as a co-writer and editor. He urged audiences to watch the film, calling it an enduring reminder of courageous Indian storytelling.
The release marks a significant milestone for fans of independent Hindi cinema, bringing one of Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta’s most celebrated collaborations to a global streaming audience.
