Shortly after its theatrical release on September 4, Mirzapur: The Movie has run into copyright controversy following allegations by Rajasthani artist and rapper Rapperiya Baalam. The musician claims that his track ‘Shoorveer’, originally created as a tribute to Maharana Pratap, was featured in the film without his authorization or formal credit.
Taking to Instagram to voice his disappointment, Rapperiya Baalam expressed frustration over the song’s inclusion during a sequence depicting gangsters. He questioned the decision to use a track dedicated to a historical figure to glorify fictional criminal characters, arguing that the placement misrepresents the intent of his work and disrespects Rajasthan’s heritage. The artist noted that while thousands of fans sent direct messages upon recognizing his composition in theaters, the production team failed to consult him directly. He stated that had the makers approached him, he would have gladly collaborated on the project. Raising concerns about licensing and copyright procedures, he questioned who authorized the track’s usage and indicated plans to pursue necessary legal steps.
As of now, the makers of Mirzapur: The Movie have not issued an official response to the allegations. Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the feature film adapts the popular streaming crime franchise for the big screen.
