Salman Khan’s Maatrubhumi Facing Release Uncertainty: Why the Date Remains Unlocked

Despite being one of the most anticipated projects of 2026, Salman Khan’s upcoming war drama, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, is currently in a state of flux. Originally rumored for an April release and later pushed to June, the film’s timeline is now stalled as the makers navigate complex regulatory and narrative hurdles.
Stuck in the Pre-Certification Phase
According to a report by Mid-Day, the film has yet to be submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay stems from the makers’ caution regarding the film’s sensitive content.
A source revealed, “The team is trying to understand the necessary steps to ensure a smooth release. As of now, no department—be it the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Army, or the CBFC—has officially screened the film.”
From Geopolitics to Human Drama: The Evolution of Maatrubhumi
The film’s journey has been marked by significant identity shifts. The project was initially titled Battle of Galwan, a direct retelling of the 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese forces. Following the teaser release in December 2025, Chinese state-run media, including the Global Times, accused the film of “distorting facts.” In February, amid efforts to stabilize diplomatic relations, Indian authorities reportedly advised the filmmakers to remove explicit references to China and the Galwan conflict. This led to the film being renamed Maatrubhumi.
Reshoots and the “Conflict” Conundrum
Director Apoorva Lakhia recently concluded a filming leg in Mumbai to adjust the film’s tone. Contrary to rumors of a total overhaul, sources clarify that the film hasn’t been rewritten from scratch. Instead, the focus has shifted toward family sequences and supporting love stories, effectively turning the project into a human drama.
However, this transition has created a creative challenge. While some war sequences remain, insiders are reportedly asking a central question: If references to China and Galwan are removed, what is the core conflict of the war?

What’s Next?
With the central narrative undergoing a redefinition and the film still awaiting clearances from key authorities, the release of Maatrubhumi remains in limbo. Until the makers lock in a narrative that satisfies both diplomatic sensitivities and cinematic stakes, fans will have to wait for an official date.
