Shri Ramlila Mahasangh Demands Special Screening of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, Threatens Protests
Director Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated epic Ramayana has sparked controversy ahead of its release, as the Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has requested an exclusive preview screening. Organization President Arjun Kumar expressed concerns over potential inaccuracies and improper depictions, warning the filmmakers that failure to address religious sensitivities could lead to widespread protests across cinema halls.
Speaking at a recent press conference, Kumar confirmed writing a formal letter to the producers. While clarifying that the Mahasangh welcomes the film and supports its release, he noted that the teaser and promotional materials raised concerns regarding odd costumes and a lack of traditional sentiment. Drawing parallels to the backlash faced by Adipurush over creative liberties, Kumar emphasized that an advance screening would allow religious leaders to offer constructive feedback and prevent public outrage.
The organization claimed it received reports suggesting certain scenes and dialogues might hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus globally. Kumar warned that if the makers release the film without a pre-screening and it contains objectionable content, the Mahasangh and affiliated Ramlila committees will actively oppose its screening in theaters.
Despite the surrounding debate, Ramayana remains one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious projects. The star-studded ensemble features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Planned as a two-part cinematic saga, the first installment is slated to hit theaters during Diwali, with the second part expected the following year. It remains to be seen how the filmmakers will respond to the Mahasangh’s screening request.
