CBFC Imposes Censorship Cuts on DC Universe’s Body Horror Clayface

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has passed Clayface, DC Universe’s R-rated psychological thriller and body horror, with an ‘A’ certificate ahead of its paid previews on October 22, 2026, and full release on October 23. However, the censor board mandated several visual modifications before clearing the film for theatrical exhibition.
Despite the adult rating, the CBFC instructed the filmmakers to censor 24 seconds of nudity and modify scenes containing explicit violence.
Key Cuts and Modifications Specified by the CBFC
Nudity Snipped (24 Seconds): Two separate scenes containing visual nudity were removed and replaced. A 5-second shot and a 19-second shot—featuring Joana Ribeiro as Mia Torrez—were censored. The makers zoomed in on an adjacent character to obscure the nude visuals.
Graphic Violence Modified: Visuals depicting a face being smashed were altered in two places, affecting a 1-second shot and a 6-second shot.
Profanity & Health Warnings: The term ‘motherf****r’ was voluntarily deleted from the English subtitles. Additionally, statutory anti-alcohol and anti-drug warning static overlays were added to the bottom-right corner of the screen where required.
Following these edits, the CBFC formally certified the film on October 19. The official runtime listed on the certificate is 108.31 minutes (1 hour, 48 minutes, and 31 seconds).
Echoes of Obsession Backlash
The mandatory edits recall a similar controversy surrounding the 2026 Hollywood adult hit Obsession, which faced 38 seconds of cuts for graphic violence and sexual content despite securing an ‘A’ certificate. That decision sparked widespread criticism from film enthusiasts questioning why adult-certified films face visual censoring.
Starring Joana Ribeiro alongside David Dencik as Gotham crime kingpin Markos Szabo, Clayface expands the DC Universe into darker, body-horror territory. It remains to be seen whether the CBFC’s latest modifications will trigger a fresh debate among Indian moviegoers.
