‘Lakadbaggha 2: The Monkey Business’ to be Screened at Cannes Market

Lakadbaggha 2: The Monkey Business, the highly anticipated sequel directed by Anshuman Jha, is set for an exclusive market screening at the Marché du Film during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. This screening serves as a strategic move to secure international distribution before the film’s official world premiere later this year.
A Global Action Collaboration
The film stands out as the first official India-Indonesia co-production. It is supported by the German production company Webfilmland Productions, which will also handle distribution in Germany. As one of the few Asian action titles showcased at the Cannes market this year, the project features an international ensemble cast which include Anshuman Jha (Actor and Director), Sunny Pang (Headshot, Havoc), Dan Chupong (Ong-Bak), Adil Hussain and Sarah-Jane Dias.
Environmental Themes and Martial Arts
Filmed in Indonesia, the sequel expands the universe of the original Lakadbaggha by shifting its focus from local animal welfare to global environmental conservation.
- Wildlife Focus: The narrative specifically highlights the plight of the critically endangered Yaki Monkey.
- Action with Purpose: Producer Jennifer Pengal of Webfilmland Productions noted that the film introduces an “animal-lover vigilante” to the global stage, blending authentic martial arts with a socially relevant soul.
- Elevated Stunts: Director Anshuman Jha emphasized that the action in this installment is designed to be more meaningful, questioning what humanity stands for in the face of animal extinction.
Industry Impact
Produced by First Ray Films, the project is being positioned as a unique entry in Indian cinema due to its “Bruce Lee-like” authenticity and international appeal. After the first film won the Vision Award at the Stuttgart Film Festival in 2023, the franchise has gained steady momentum, with the Cannes showcase marking its next major step toward a global audience.
