Roy Kapur Productions has emerged victorious in a legal battle concerning the title of its latest web series, Matka King. The Bombay High Court’s ruling ensures that the Vijay Varma-led period drama can continue streaming on Prime Video without legal hurdles.
The dispute was initiated by Ms. Tanuja Bhagat, who sought an injunction against the show’s title and release. She claimed the series was based on the life of her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat—whom she identified as the original “Matka King”—and argued the project lacked her authorization.
Court Proceedings and Outcome
The case moved quickly through the judicial system this month: Justice Sharmila Deshmukh declined to grant interim relief, allowing the production house to proceed with its scheduled launch. The series officially premiered globally on Prime Video. Counsel for the plaintiff informed the court that they had received instructions to withdraw the suit. The court subsequently disposed of the matter, effectively ending the legal challenge.
