The much-discussed box office clash between Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 unfolded on October 2. Featuring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a lighthearted entertainer. Many in the industry and among audiences felt the film would have been a perfect fit for a Diwali release, with the Festival of Lights just three weeks away. Some believed Dharma Productions should have held off for an October 21 release instead. However, that would have meant clashing with Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Paresh Rawal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui—part of Dinesh Vijan’s successful horror-comedy universe.
In an interview with The Times of India, Varun Dhawan explained why he and producer Karan Johar chose to avoid a clash with Thamma out of respect for their friendships.Varun shared, “Our release date shifted for several reasons. We focused on making the best film possible. Films like Param Sundari, Baaghi 4, Jolly LLB 3, and The Conjuring: Last Rites did well, and we wanted a good run of at least 2-3 weeks.”He added, “Diwali would have been another good window, but I’m very close friends with Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan) and Amar Kaushik. I’ve worked with them on Bhediya and Badlapur.
Karan is also close friends with them. If someone is your friend, you don’t want to compete against them.”Varun clarified, “This date coincides with Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra, which is also great. Ultimately, it wasn’t my call—it was the production’s decision. But the date is significant, so they felt there would be enough space. We’re not as big a film as Kantara, nor do we have that expectation. ”This candid insight highlights the camaraderie within the industry and the thoughtful decisions behind release strategies.
