A big news there as we hear the leading production company – Phonographic Performance Ltd popularly known as PPL India has filed a copyright infringement case against comedian Kapil Sharma’s Netflix show The Great Indian Kapil Show in the Bombay High Court. As per reports, the complaint alleges that three popular songs were used without proper licensing in Season 3 of the series, which aired between June and September 2025.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the commercial suit, filed on December 12, claims that the show featured the tracks “M Bole To” from Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), “Rama Re” from Kaante (2002), and “Subha Hone Na De” from Desi Boyz (2011), all without obtaining the necessary permissions from the rights holders. PPL India argues that this constitutes “public performance/communication to the public” under the Indian Copyright Act, which mandates a licence for such usage. These songs were used during the interview of the global icon – Priyanka Chopra at the said show.
The complaint further notes that the show is first recorded before a live audience, during which these songs are played audibly, and later streamed on Netflix. This dual usage, PPL India contends, aggravates the infringement. The organization had previously issued a cease-and-desist notice to the producers and Netflix in early November, but states that their response was only a holding reply and did not halt the unauthorized use of the music.
PPL India has requested the Bombay High Court to prohibit further use of its copyrighted music without a license, compel disclosure of earnings derived from the unauthorized use, and consider appointing a court receiver to seize infringing materials. The case is expected to be heard soon in the commercial division of the Bombay High Court. At the time of reporting, neither Kapil Sharma’s representatives, Netflix, nor the production companies had issued any comments regarding the lawsuit. Stay tuned to know more about it only with us.
