Indian cinegoers will kick off 2026 with a thrilling and sensual film, The Housemaid, which released in the West on December 19 to praise for its gripping storyline, twists, and strong performances—especially by Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. However, Indian audiences may face disappointment as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has heavily censored the film’s intimate scenes.
On December 4, the CBFC granted The Housemaid an ‘A’ certificate after mandating several edits. Profanity including the words ‘bh,’ ‘ct,’ and ‘motherf***r’ were muted, following the Examining Committee’s recommendations. More notably, the board demanded the removal of all nudity visuals involving female breasts, resulting in a staggering 8-minute cut—the longest censorship-related trim in recent times. As per the Btown portal – Bollywood Hungama has learned that an extended, intense lovemaking sequence featuring Sydney Sweeney has been excised from the Indian version, along with another similar scene.
At the same time, a scene showing Amanda Seyfried using a breast pump was also removed. Interestingly, a brief shot of male lead Brandon Sklenar’s buttocks remains intact. So, despite these significant cuts, sources who have viewed the censored version confirm that the film’s narrative and erotic essence largely remain intact. Originally, The Housemaid ran for 131 minutes and 46 seconds (2 hours, 11 minutes, 46 seconds).
After the edits and the inclusion of anti-smoking advertisements at the start and after the interval, the Indian version’s runtime is now 125 minutes and 46 seconds (2 hours, 5 minutes, 46 seconds). The Housemaid tells the story of a woman on parole struggling to find employment, who secures a job as a housemaid at a wealthy family’s sprawling estate.
What begins as a promising opportunity soon turns dangerous as she uncovers dark secrets lurking behind the opulent facade. Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us and if you have anything to share do comment below and share your thoughts.
