In just one week, the YRF Spy Universe, once hailed as an unstoppable franchise with five consecutive hits, has faced a major setback. After the blockbuster successes of Pathaan and Tiger 3 in 2023, expectations were sky-high for Aditya Chopra’s War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr.
To create a grand spectacle, Yash Raj Films invested heavily, with a record-breaking budget of around Rs. 450 crores (all-inclusive). Unfortunately, this gamble has not paid off. Industry insiders reveal that YRF is staring at significant losses on War 2. According to reliable sources, “approximately Rs. 150 crores have been recovered through digital, satellite, and music rights, while the worldwide theatrical share is expected to reach just Rs. 140 crores at best.
This puts YRF’s losses at around Rs. 60 to 70 crores.”This marks the biggest financial disaster for YRF in recent times, rivaling the infamous flop Thugs of Hindostan starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. The source added, “Monday’s box office numbers plummeted, signaling what could be the end of the franchise’s momentum. The failure of War 2 has also cast doubts on the future plans of YRF’s spyverse.”The impact extends beyond YRF.
Telugu distributor Naga Vamsi, who acquired War 2’s rights for Rs. 90 crores, is also facing heavy losses. With the Telugu box office expected to generate less than Rs. 40 crores, he is set to lose over Rs. 50 crores on the film.
After delivering a string of hits including Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3, War 2 has become the first major failure in the YRF Spy Universe, marking a significant and costly stumble for the production house.
