The Ayushmann Khurrana starrer film Dream Girl 2 is back in the news. This time, the makers have a sigh of relief to breathe. The Bombay High Court has dismissed a copyright infringement case filed against Balaji Telefilms concerning the 2023 comedy Dream Girl 2. The court ruled that the film’s storyline significantly differs from the claimant’s work and described the breach of confidence allegations as “far-fetched.”
Writer Ashim Kumar Bagchi had filed the suit, asserting that the Ayushmann Khurrana-led film was based on his script originally titled Kal Kisne Dekha, later re-registered as The Show Must Go On. Bagchi claimed his story—a gender-swap comedy about a man impersonating a woman and facing humorous situations when his true identity was at risk—was shared confidentially with one of the credited writers years ago. He alleged that key elements of his script were used without authorization.
However, the court found that Bagchi’s claim essentially sought exclusive rights over common comedic themes like mistaken identity and disguise, which are generic ideas not protected under copyright law. These narrative elements were deemed “stock” and “unoriginal,” making them ineligible for copyright protection. Noting the absence of substantial similarity between the two works, the judges rejected the case and ordered Bagchi to pay Rs 1 lakh each in legal costs to Balaji Telefilms and the other defendant.
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, Dream Girl 2 is the sequel to the 2019 hit Dream Girl. The film features Ayushmann Khurrana reprising his role as Karam, who once again adopts the female persona ‘Pooja,’ triggering a cascade of comedic chaos and romantic mix-ups. Alongside Ananya Panday, the cast includes Paresh Rawal, Vijay Raaz, and Rajpal Yadav. The movie was a commercial hit, further establishing the franchise as one of Bollywood’s beloved comedy series.
