Sitaare Zameen Par has managed to achieve the unthinkable. With advance bookings falling short, the makers employed a unique strategy by opting not to schedule any shows before 11:00 am on the day of release. This decision was likely aimed at avoiding the negativity that could arise from poor occupancy during early screenings. The film opened with a modest ₹10 crores, which, while fair, is below expectations for a star of Aamir Khan’s caliber. However, positive word of mouth and Aamir’s credibility began to make a significant impact.
On Saturday, the film saw a dramatic rise in attendance, with Sunday shows also filling up quickly. Due to this surge in demand, multiplexes had to add post-midnight screenings. This trend of late-night showings is a post-pandemic phenomenon, with films like Sooryavanshi (2021) leading the way. Subsequent releases such as Gangubai Kathiawadi, Drishyam 2, Gadar 2, Animal, Pathaan, Jawan, Stree 2, and Chhaava also benefited from such showings, indicating strong audience turnout.
In Mumbai, several theaters, including PVR Oberoi Mall Goregaon, Maxus Kandivali, and PVR Sangam Andheri, added late-night screenings to accommodate the demand. Sitaare Zameen Par opened at ₹10.70 crores and is expected to earn around ₹20 crores on Day 2, with strong advance bookings indicating a weekend total nearing ₹50 crores. So, it is evident to claim that the film is likely to gain more on its first weekend collection.
What’s particularly encouraging is that, while the film initially performed better in elite cinemas, it has now attracted a broader, mass audience. This shift bodes well for its long-term box office performance, suggesting a healthy lifetime collection for Aamir Khan’s latest release.
