Haraamkhor Movie Review

Haraamkhor

This Friday, we have to movies to release, which certainly include the one called Haraamkhor. The film is directed by Shlok Sharma, which has Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi in the lead roles along with Trimala Adhikari, Mohd Samad, Irfan Khan and Harish Khanna in supporting roles. The film is produced by a slew of people like Guneet Monga, Anurag Kashyap, Feroze Alameer and Achin Jain under the banner of Indian Film Studios. The music for the film is given by Jasleen Royal, while the film was engrossed in a controversy for having a similar logo as claimed by a leading textbook bureau called Balbharati and its promotion scenes from the film. The film was also premiered at the 15th annual New York Indian Film Festival along with the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). The actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui also received the Best Actor award for the film at the New York Indian Film Festival.

Story

Meet Shyam (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who is a teacher in a small village of Madhya Pradesh who takes tuition for his sustenance apart from teaching in a small school based in his place. One of his student is Sandhya played by Sweta Tripathi, who comes at his place for the tuition apart from being in the same school wherein Shyam teaches. The 14 year girl has no mother while his father who is an alcoholic policeman has some illegitimate relationship with a lady outside. It obvious to see the teenager to get unnerved about the pitiable situation back at home and later develops some attraction towards her teacher, which is reciprocated equally by Shyam as well. With time the love story is seen moving ahead but unlike any story, it also has an enemy in the form of a student called Irfan Khan who is her classmate. The climax is too interesting and tough to digest, which can be explored at any theatre.

Review

The filmmaker feels that every man has a devil inside him and hence has named the movie such ways. It is really difficult to make movies on such subject, which really needs the strength and courage to showcase over the silver screen. At least this is perhaps the first time to make a movie of such nature hence it took long for the makers to get the certification from the Censor Board. The film showcasing the relationship between a teacher and student should interest though but at the same time may not attract audience despite some powerful performances there by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the Tripathi. The climax shown in the film is really interesting and something really unexpected, which makes the film interesting to catch but more often the film with such subjects fails to attract a wider audience. This makes the film a niche based movie, which is hard to catch by the masses rather only a selected amount of crowd.

Star performances

When it comes to performances, no one can beat Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He is a versatile actor who leaves no stone unturned to give some of the best performances over the silver screen. While playing the character of Shyam, Siddiqui has not only portrayed the character the best but at the same time took all care to portray the right amount of emotions on his face to make things really realistic that has been the crux of his performance of every movie he has does. Now talking about Sweta Tripathi who plays the character of Sandhya in it, the actress is simply awesome in her performance though lagging behind when it comes to Siddiqui. The others too remained okay in their performances and therefore have boosted up the entertainment value to some extent.

Direction, music and other elements

The film has a decent direction called Shlok Sharma. He is courageous enough to take a decent step forward to make a movie on a subject, which has less sheen to attract a wider audience. However, in terms of performances the film can be called as exceptional, whereas the story though turned out monotonous at the midst. The music is okay and has not much to deliver in the film, similar is the story with other elements including screenplay, editing and photography. After all one cannot expect much from a low budget film like this, which was made in mere three weeks.

Haraamkhor The last word

The film has something different in nature which was applauded at the global level but it fails to have a subject with mass appeal. The story as said turns monotonous after moving ahead with time but thanks to the performance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui it remains a stuff to catch. Nonetheless the over entertainment of the film still can be called as a meager one, which has therefore hampered the rating to a great extent.

Rating – 3.0
