Farooq Sheikh biographyParallel cinema or the New Indian Cinema was gaining popularity in the Indian film industry. It was at this point that talented actors like Farooq Sheikh and Nazruddin Shah started their careers and slowly gained footholds in the film stream. These films were different from the commercial masala films. They were chiefly Naturalistic and Realistic. No wonder the actors needed to be naturally gifted and spontaneous.

Farooq ‘s first break in the Indian film industry was Garam Hawa where he played a significant supporting role to the lead actor Balraj Sahani. After a few unsuccessful films, he got noticed in the veteran director Satyajit Ray’s much acclaimed film Shatranj Ke Khiladi which was an adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s short story of the same name. Thus Farooq , born in a family of Zamindars established himself as an actor. He had a barrister’s degree and acting experience in theatres at this point. His notable films include Noori, Umrao Jan , Chashme Baddoor, Bazaar, Rang Birangi, Saath Saath, Rang Birnagi, Kisise Na Kehna and Biwi Ho Toh Aisi to name a few. Although he was seen in many parallel films, he was most delighting in his comic films. Chashme Baddoor is a landmark in the genre of Comedy and is one of the most loved films even today. Kisse Na Kehna is another of the same league that has his subtle acting rendering beauty to the realistic drama. In 1985, he acted in the TV serial Shrikant.

Farooq and Deepti Naval is an adorable pair even today. The pair appeared in films like Chashme Baddoor, Saath Saath and Kisise Na Kehna. Though his later films were not successful at the box office yet there was no decrease in his popularity. In the nineties, he was seen in only a few films and also appeared in a couple of TV serials namely Chamatkar and Ji Mantriji. He played a significant role in the Shahrukh Khan starrer Film Maya Memsaab in 1992. His anchoring and presentation skills were also sighted and he presented Binny double or Quits Quiz Contest on Vividh Bharati. He was the host of the Celebrity TV show Jeena Isika Naam Hain in the initial episodes. In 1992, he acted in the famous stage drama Tumhari Amrita with Shabaana Azmi in the lead role. It went on to become a great hit for 12 years with various adaptations. With his penchant for stage, Farooq , in 2004, directed Azhar Ka Khwab which was the Indian adaptation of the Bernard Shaw Masterpiece Pygmalion (1912).
The 2000s saw him in much low profile films. Most significant was his National award for best supporting role in the film Lahore in 2009. He last appeared in 2013in Club 60 in the lead role of Dr. Tarique.
